AI governance is a young discipline staffed largely by people who moved across from privacy, model risk, information security and data science. Employers know this, and most advertise for transferable experience rather than years in an AI governance title.
The work is practical. Expect to maintain an inventory of AI systems, define what a proportionate review looks like for each level of risk, and sit between engineering teams who want to ship and control functions who want evidence. Familiarity with how models are built and evaluated matters as much as knowledge of the rules.
