Working in privacy engineering

Privacy engineers are software engineers first. They write and ship code, and they bring a specialist understanding of how personal data flows through a system and where it can be reduced, separated or removed.

Demand comes from organisations with large data platforms, where manual compliance does not scale. If you are an engineer with an interest in privacy, contributing to deletion, retention or data mapping work in your current role is the most direct route across.

What employers usually ask for

  • Strong software engineering experience in a language such as Python, Go or Java
  • Experience with data platforms, pipelines or identity and access systems
  • Understanding of techniques such as pseudonymisation and differential privacy
  • Ability to translate legal requirements into technical design
