Working in AI policy

Policy roles reward people who can read a technical paper and a draft bill with equal care. Much of the job is synthesis: gathering evidence, understanding what different groups need, and writing advice a minister, board or the public can act on.

Routes in include the civil service, regulators, parliamentary research, academia and in-house public affairs. Subject expertise in a neighbouring field such as competition, online safety or data protection is often the way through the door.

What employers usually ask for

  • A record of clear written analysis, ideally published or used in decisions
  • Understanding of the UK and EU approaches to regulating AI
  • Experience working with stakeholders who disagree with each other
  • Comfort with technical detail without necessarily being an engineer
