Working in data governance

Data governance sits close to privacy but answers a wider question: does the organisation know what data it holds, who is responsible for it and whether it can be relied on? The answer underpins both regulatory compliance and any serious use of AI.

Many roles are part policy, part delivery. You might write a retention standard and then work with engineers to apply it in a data warehouse. Experience with catalogue or lineage tooling helps, but the scarce skill is persuading busy teams to take ownership.

What employers usually ask for

• Experience defining data ownership, standards or retention schedules
• Familiarity with a framework such as DAMA-DMBOK
• Working knowledge of data catalogue or lineage tools
• Ability to work across technical and business teams
