How to read a privacy salary range
What an advertised salary range tells you, what it leaves out, and how to compare offers across sectors when you are weighing up a privacy or AI governance role.
We ask every employer to state a salary, and most do. A range is still only a starting point. Here is how to read one, and what to ask before you compare two offers.
Where in the range will you land?
Employers usually appoint in the lower two-thirds of an advertised range and keep the top for an exceptional match or for progression in post. Public sector bodies often have fixed pay points and start new joiners at the bottom unless you can evidence equivalent experience. Ask early how the starting point is decided.
What sits outside the number
- Pension. Employer contributions vary widely between sectors. A generous scheme can be worth more than a noticeably higher salary elsewhere.
- Bonus and equity. Ask what was actually paid in recent years, not only the target.
- Allowances. Some advertised figures include a location weighting; some add it on top.
- Hours and pattern. A “pro rata” salary is the full-time figure, so work out what you would actually be paid.
Day rates and contracts
Interim roles are quoted by the day. To compare with a salary, account for unpaid holiday, gaps between contracts and whether the engagement is inside or outside IR35, which changes how you are taxed. Confirm the status before you accept.
Comparing sectors
Financial services and technology companies tend to pay most in cash terms. The public sector, universities and charities generally pay less and offer more in pension, leave and flexibility. Neither is better in the abstract; it depends on what you need at this point in your career.
Using our salary insights
The salary insights page summarises the ranges advertised on BOHOjobs by specialism and level. It reflects what employers are offering in live listings, which makes it a useful sense check, though it is not a survey of what people are paid.
