Working in digital regulation

Digital regulation now spans data protection, online safety, digital markets, consumer law and AI. Regulators increasingly work together, and employers look for people who can see how regimes overlap for a single product.

Time spent in a regulator is valued highly in industry, and the reverse is also true. If you are considering a move between the two, check the role’s rules on conflicts of interest and any waiting period before you can work on related matters.

What employers usually ask for

  • Knowledge of at least one regime in depth, such as UK GDPR or the Online Safety Act 2023
  • Experience of regulatory engagement, supervision or enforcement
  • Careful, well-evidenced writing
  • Sound judgement about risk and proportionality
